Reading Tips

Listening on TOEFL iBT

In this section, you will be asked to listen to lectures and conversation. these listening tasks will have a definite structure, which is similar to the reading passages we just studied. there will be an introduction, supporting details or examples, and a conclusion.

Let's take a closer look at the structure of these lectures and conversation.

In a lectures, you can expect to hear the following :

  • Opening : The teacher or professor will greet the class and announce the topic of the lecture.
  • Purpose of the lecture : After stating the topic, the speaker will usually mention the focus of this particular lecture.
  • Details and/or Examples : The lecture will usually include several supporting details and/or examples.
  • Conclusion : conclusion in the lectures will not always be obvious. Some lectures or talks will end rather abruptly.
Additionally, an academic lecture or talk on the TOEFL is also likely to contain :
  • Question and/or comments: During the lecture, a student will often ask a question or make a comment. The answers to these question typically reinforce the speaker's purpose.
In a conversation, you can expect to hear the following:
  • Greeting: The two people talking will first exchange greetings.
  • Statement 0f problem/issue: Conversation on the TOEFL typically revolve around a problem or an issue faced by one of the speakers.
  • Response: After the problem or issue is raised, one of the speakers will response, usually by making a suggestion to the other.
  • Resolution: The conversation will end with some sort of closing or resolution to the problem.
Your challenge in the Listening section is similar to your challenge in the Reading section of the TOEFL. When listening to a conversation or lecture, you need to do the following:
  1. Identify what the topic is.
  2. Figure out why the topic is being addressed.
  3. Note the supporting examples.
You have practiced identifying these parts in the previous chapter. Now the challenge is to apply what you have learned to the Listening section. There are some things, however, that make the listening tasks especially difficult.

Reading Practice

The Reading Comprehension section contains reading passages and questions about the passages. The questions are about information that is stated or implied in the passage and about some of the specific words in the passages. Because many English words have more than one meaning, it is important to remember that these questions concern the meaning of a word or phrase within the context of the passage.

Answer all questions about the information in a passage on the basis of what is stated orimplied in that passage.

Read the following passage:

The railroad was not the first institution to impose regularity on

society, or to draw attention to the importance of precise

timekeeping. For as long as merchants have set out their wares at
Line
daybreak and communal festivities have been celebrated, people
(5)
have been in rough agreement with their neighbors as to the time of

day. The value of this tradition is today more apparent than ever.

Were it not for public acceptance of a single yardstick of time,

social life would be unbearably chaotic: the massive daily transfers

of goods, services, and information would proceed in fits and
(10)
starts; the very fabric of modern society would begin to unravel.

Example I
What is the main idea of the passage?
  1. In modern society we must make more time for our neighbors.
  2. The traditions of society are timeless.
  3. An accepted way of measuring time is essential for the smooth functioning of society.
  4. Society judges people by the times at which they conduct certain activities.
The main idea of the passage is that societies need to agree about how time is measured in order to function smoothly. Therefore, you should choose answer C.

Example II
In line 6, the phrase "this tradition" refers to
  1. the practice of starting the business day at dawn
  2. friendly relations between neighbors
  3. the railroad's reliance on time schedules
  4. people's agreement on the measurement of time
The phrase "this tradition" refers to the preceding clause, "people have been in rough agreement with their neighbors as to the time of day." Therefore, you should choose answer D.

Speaking Tips (TOEFL iBT)

The best way to practice is speaking with native speakers of English as much as possible. For those not living in English-speaking countries, finding native speakers of English to speak with can be quite challenging. In some countries, there are English-speaking tutors or assistants who can help students with their conversation and overall communication skills. Another way you can practice speaking is to join a club that involves speaking in English about movies, music, travel and so on. If no such club exists in your area, try starting your own club and invite native speakers you know to join, too.
Here are a few suggestions for ways to build your speaking skills:
• Practice stating an opinion or preference within a 1-minute time limit.
• Read a short article (100–200 words), and make an outline that only includes the major points of the article. Use the outline to summarize the information orally.
• Find listening and reading material on the same topic. The material can provide similar or different views. (The Internet and the library are good places to find information.) Take notes or create outlines on the listening and reading material and do the following:

o Orally summarize the information in both, and then orally synthesize by combining the information from the reading and listening materials and explain how they relate.
o State an opinion about the ideas and information presented in the reading and listening material.
• Record yourself as you practice, and ask yourself questions such as:

o Did I complete the task?
o Did I speak clearly?
o Did I make grammatical errors?
o Did I use words correctly?
o Did I organize my ideas clearly and appropriately?
o Did I use the time effectively?
o Did I speak too fast? Or too slowly?
o Did I pause too often?

• Monitor your own progress by keeping an audio journal of your speaking practice. You can also ask for feedback from friends, tutors or teachers. Teachers can use the TOEFL iBT Speaking Scoring Guide to evaluate your practice.
